In old Afrikaans braai lore, a "staanrib" refers to standing the wood upright in a conical teepee over the ember bed. Flat wood stacks choke airflow. Standing wood draws oxygen upward like a blast furnace, getting your Sekelbos, Camel thorn, or Black thorn coals ready in half the time.
